The Potentially Surprising Health Benefits of Donating Blood

Involved in the mortgage industry for over 12 years, Todd Gerleman currently serves as a mortgage broker with Team USA Mortgage in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where he strives to customize agreements to meet his clients’ needs. Outside of work, Todd Gerleman contributes to his community by regularly donating both plasma and blood. While it may seem surprising, regularly donating blood actually has a number of health benefits for the donor.

Much of the health benefit of donating blood comes from reducing iron stores in the body. Excess iron levels may increase a person’s risk of developing cancer. A study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute linked blood donations to lower risks of cancer.

Another study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that donating blood annually can reduce risk of heart attack by nearly 100 percent. Again, the reduced risk relates to a lowered iron level. High levels of iron can constrict blood flow and make heart attack more likely.

The other major health benefit is that blood donation can reveal underlying health issues. Typically, clinics verify that you are healthy enough to donate before removing blood and then test donations for a variety of diseases afterward.

Ways That Running Can Help You De-Stress

An experienced mortgage broker with more than 12 years of experience, Todd Gerleman leverages his experience in the industry to provide the lowest interest rates and excellent service to his clients at Team USA Mortgage. Todd Gerleman also established Gman Marketing Services, a marketing company specializing in Internet advertising, in 2013. Away from his professional obligations, Mr. Gerleman enjoys running as a de-stressing activity.

Running can help people de-stress in multiple ways. The act itself releases endorphins in your body, which gives the brain a feeling of euphoria. Moreover, research shows that people who exercise on a regular basis tend to be less prone to feeling anxiety in stressful situations. The health benefits of running also include improved cardiovascular health, more energy, and weight loss, which help reduce your risk of disease and may help you make healthy choices in other aspects of your life, like your food choices.

In addition to these physical benefits of running, the activity promotes personal time and allows you room to think and relax. It mimics meditation in that it is both peaceful and repetitive. It is also a personal test of strength and endurance, and can boost a goal-setting mindset. For others who prefer group runs, running can also be a social activity that allows you to build up your community through a shared interest.
